Today"s outline: different types of memory: overview, skill memory: behavioral processes, kinds of skill memories, practice, models of skill memory, brain substrates, the basal ganglia and skill learning, cortical representations of skills, the cerebellum and timing, clinical perspectives, huntington"s disease, parkinson"s disease. Modal model of memory: memory is not a unitary thing, standard model of memory, the modal model of memory, how information is stored over time. Classification of long-term memory: tulving"s triarchic theory of memory, 3 divisions, divisions reflect different tasks required of memory and level of control and conscious awareness. Sensory register (sensory memory): hold info here and decide whether it"s important to give more attention to it. Short-term memory: kept in a current stream of thought; forefront of thinking. Divides long term memory into 3 division:episodic, semantic, procedural. Episodic: autobiographic events, things that happens to the individual; requires self awareness. Procedural/ skill memory: memory for how to do things/skills; doesn"t require conscious awareness.
