Attention: umbrella term = attention is a general term that a lot of other terms are a part of. *weapon focus = example, when someone is being robbed with a weapon involved, attention is directed at the weapon leading to a decrease in descriptive recall of the robber. Awareness of our mental resources, ability to attend to social settings, etc. Many philosophers had an idea of attention. Wolff (18th century) books on attention. Wundt (1880s) credited for foundation of empirical psychology. Introspection = participant"s description of tasks, objects, activities, etc. Problems: biases, difficulty in interpretation, inability to be fully aware of thought processes: argument against the idea of introspection behaviourism, concrete observable information (watson: psychology should focus on observable behavior) Study of cognition interrupted as study of behavior erupted. But behaviorism halted because: language comprehension is too complex for. Behaviorism: argument between skinner (behaviorism) vs. chomsky (cognitive)
