Hmf = emf + cultural tools via scaffolding within zpd. Higher mental functions: ways of thinking that are helped by psychological tools. Elementary mental functions: what biology gives us; biological characteristics; things we are born with that are built upon with the use of cultural tools. I. e. our ability to remember things, to learn, etc. Involves one that is more experienced teaching one that is less experienced. I. e. parents and children, students and teachers. Should be individually tailored to what the child is able to do. The experienced one should be aware and sensitive to the changing abilities of their children. Example: counting (video that we watched in lecture) Mother suggests that the child separates the different kinds so that it"s easier to count. After the mother teaches the child to separate the objects into piles, the child is able to do that by himself the next time. Child moves up in the zone of proximal development.
