PSYC 363 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Minority Group, Ingroups And Outgroups, Henri Tajfel
Document Summary
Recognize value in respecting diversity (or at least value in tolerating certain kinds of diversity) Multiculturalism doesn"t mean automatic acceptance of all forms of difference, but willingness to deal with difference respectfully. Willingness to try to accomodate group differences as much as possible. Categorization into different groups is the problem. Disadvantaged groups more so than privileged groups. Celebrating different cultures not likely to directly address inequality. Minority identity can be co-opted for the appearance of inclusion, diversity and equality. Increase minority groups" commitment to the common identity. How can a superordinate identity protect subgroup identities? (the multicultural challenge) Superordinate id: large, inclusive identities that contain many diverse subgroups. Eg superordinate id: christians; subgroups: eastern orthodox, roman catholic. Prototypicality: extent to which a subgroup represents the superordinate group. The ingroup projection model (mummendey, waldzus, & wenzel) Dual identity: identifying strongly with both one"s subgroup and the wider superordinate category.
