PSYC 391 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: John Bowlby, Inflammation
Document Summary
Psyc 391 lecture 1 - introduction and attachment insecurities. An innate tendency to form attachments to stronger, more capable others that keep us safe. Seek proximity to caregivers and avoid separation with the caregiver. As an infant whose caregiver is not nearby, you are exposed to danger. The caregiver is a secure base from which the infant explores the world. Train of thought: caregiver will catch me if i fall . Imagine that you did not develop a bond with your parent, if a stranger tried to take you home with them, you might just go along with it. A tightly-bonded infant in this situation would not want to go with the stranger since that would bring them farther away from their caregiver. The attachment bond keeps the infant safe and also helps the infant regulate emotions. Attachment behaviours are most salient when the infant is under threat.
