Life-threatening violence: acute conflict, capacity for serious violence, severe disinhibition. Involved in serious dispute or very upset over outcome of dispute: especially relationship separation or child custody. Important warning signs: stalking, ultimatum or conditional threat. Capacity for serious violence: demonstrated ability or willingness to engage in life-threatening violence, especially current thoughts of violence, history of life-threatening violence. Important warning signs: current thoughts of violence involving weapons or other high-lethality methods, strangulation, used weapons or high lethality, a. Severe disinhibition: mental state may overcome usual inhibitions against life-threatening violence, especially mental or emotional problems. Important warning signs: serious substance abuse, serious mental illness, psychosis, depression, suicidal or nihilistic thoughts. Paradox: expanding our understanding of the nature and causes of violence complicates assessment, but at the same time introduces additional opportunities for decreasing risk and increasing safety. Interactional: people they know, someone they love.
