Criminals were evolutionary throwbacks; he could predict whether someone would be deviant based on their skull type. What is deviant in one society is completely normal in another. Historically there has been examples of culture where incest was normal to preserve bloodlines. People become deviant as they are defined that way. Deviance is looked at as functional in that it helps to maintain social cohesion and social order. Looked at the societal level (macro level) 1) affirms cultural values/norms: affirms importance and relevance of social norms for us. ex: sled dogs killed in whistler after 2010 olympics. according to.
