Role of children: brought into drug armies (often less charges), part of informal economy (begging, watching cars, running errands, etc. Literal death: child-shifting; the child may go to godparents the state only cares for those who are genuine orphans -- the children who had to say that their father was dead. Symbolic death: child cast to the street. Govt. ignored the slums; didn"t improve lives of those living there. Drugs played big role in favelas: children became involved with drug dealing, drug lords became role models for children.
