SA 150 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Premarital Sex, Marital Rape, Incest Taboo
Document Summary
Sex: biological distinction between females and males. Gender: an element of culture that refers to the personal and patterns of behaviour, including responsibilities, opportunities and privileges that a culture attaches to your sex. Gender role: a set of expectations concerning behaviour and attitudes that relates to being female or male. Cultural variation: like all dimensions of human behaviour, sexuality is also very much a cultural issue, notions of modesty, restrictions placed upon openness. The incest taboo: found in every society, the norm forbidding sexual relations between certain relatives. A form of social organization in which males dominate females. Sexism: belief that one sex is innately inferior or superior than the other. Sexism has a high price for both women and men. Most sociologists believe gender is socially constructed and can be changed. Handling of children: female passivity and emotion; male independence and action.
