Often there is struggle b/w culture as standard of excellence & way of life. No total agreement as to what constitutes culture. We all have culture, not only elite. One of points of contestation bc of complexity. Carries ideas of being true to particular culture. Hipster - often thought of as inauthentic . Culture travels, is dynamic, does not objective, cannot write one definition of culture. Culture able to impose values, language, ways of behavior & interpreting behavior on given society through political & economic power. Lived & breathed so often that we don"t notice it as being restricted. English-speaking, white, heterosexual male university graduate of european b/g b/w ages of 25-55, in good health, owning home in middle-class neighbourhood in ontario/quebec. Group of people sharing distinctive set of cultural beliefs & behaviors differing in significant way but does not necessarily oppose dominant culture. E. g. lawyers, endurance runners, snow globe collectors. Groups challenging/rejecting selected elements of dominant culture.
