SA 150 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Tow Truck, Cultural Universal, Social Conflict
Document Summary
A large amount of poeple who reside within a territory (something they call land) who share a culture. Ways of life, ways of thinking, ways of acting, and ways of behaviour. Passed down from generation, transmitted by behaviours and knowledge. Material culture- anything that can be touched, physical. Nonmaterial culture- build culture based on culture, things that can"t be touched. Ex, 1000 years form now when an archealogist digs up pieces of plastic they will be able to predict our non material culture. Never separated, non material culture always tells you what the materials are and how to use it. Becuase a car and rope can"t be used to tow another truck. Material culture developed as a faster rate. Used to be able to drive and talk. Because didnt know how to use it back then. Abstract system of words, symbols and meanings. Alllows for cultural transmission, values and beliefs. Health care and the social safety net.
