Lineages = genealogical segments of a clan. A clan is a system of lineages and a lineage is a genealogical segment of a clan. Alternatively one may speak of a lineage as an agnatic group of members of which are genealogically linked, and of a clan as a system of such groups, the system being, among the nuer, a genealogical system (192) A clan is not to nuer an abstraction and there is no word in their language that can be translated clan inours.
