The chapter also considers the notion that tourism today displays a number of distinctive characteristics that allow us to speak of post-tourism as an emergent form. The walton reading (reading 4. 1) on the work of historians dealing with tourism provides useful background for the examination of particular tourism developments. Walton makes it clear that the historical analysis of tourism has been somewhat neglected, and suggests certain subjects and topics that need much greater attention.
