Chapter 4 covers a broad range of topics concerning tourism"s economic dimensions. The notion that tourism is an industry is questioned and the term sector is presented as a more accurate description. The effects of recession on the sector are outlined and we note various ways in which tourism is being influenced by globalizing processes especially in the holiday cruise industry. The various economic costs and benefits of tourism are examined and the relationships between tourism, development, and dependency are explored. A case study from hawaii is presented to show how tourism was introduced as a substitute economy to replace a declining pineapple plantation economy. The experience of the gambia is examined as an example of how a poor west african country is trapped in tourism-based dependency, with no apparent way out. Reading 6. 1 (the sharpley reading) is a well-balanced discussion of globalization in relation to tourism. The globalization concept is examined and its various shades of meaning noted.
