C h a p t e r 1. Organization allows for tasks to be accomplished efficiently and to reach goals. In groups, members must set rules and those within the group must follow them accordingly. Structure of groups must exist outside of the members in it. Although members within groups may change, structure of the group remains the same. Societies are the same; sum is more than the individual part. People must organize into some structure and construct rules for behavior. Key goal of sociology: systematically study and analyze the various elements that make up a society"s structure and the relationships among these elements. Society: describes the structure of our social world. Sociocultural system: combination of concepts; society, social structure, culture are used interchangeably. Key concept to remember: understand the relationships of power found within it. Proximal relations of power: power that exists within personal relationships.
