Social Inequality- the long term existence of significant difference in access to good and services among groups -social standing is a consequence of a society system or structure of opportunity and award Ascription: social status received at birth Achievement: what you have done to achieve a certain position; or not done CASTE SYSTEM (no longer in effect) Meritocracy: based on merit, what you do or do not do Davis-Moore Hypothesis (Structural Functionalism) ⁃ social inequality plays an important role for the operation of society ⁃ every structure because it contributes to the over all stability of society; or it disappears • the assertion that social stratification has beneficial consequences for the operation of society • inequality is needed- a system of unequal rewards motivates people to fulfill the most important jobs in society. • ex: NHL player, brain surgeon, and CEO of a company- fulfill important jobs within society. given to them by hard work and merit • lower paying jobs is more "anyone can do it", but someone has to do it Dominant Ideology: Counter Ideology: Conflict Theory ▪ Social inequality is the result of the systems of distribution and reared that benefit the dominant groups and hurt the marginalized ▪ Dominant groups attempt to martin or increase the privileges at the expense of others ▪ marginalized groups attempt to improve their life chances Intersectionality- theory that -if you are a minority their isn’t as much prestige -generalities -specific sports ~ main stream sports- ability, entitlement, experience Inside and Outside perspective — sometimes you can be an outsider of the insiders • racial differences : “populations” - we can not understand an individual by race sports is mythologized as a mobility Darwin’s Athletes(1996) ▪ do these arguments hold up over time?
