Document Summary
Paolo veronese, feast in the house of levi: 42 feet long painting, oil painting on canvas. Made for refectory of the ss giovanni paolo chapel. A meal taking place in the middle (in the centre arch); monumental arches. Presumably it is judas whose face is in shadow. In a church meeting, the church leaders decided painters should not paint things that are mis- leading, especially in relation to the bible and scriptures. Things that don"t belong in the painting: servant with nosebleed, german soldiers, dwarves and jesters, all of these things might make people laugh at holy events, which is not deemed appropriate by church leaders. Veronese claimed artistic license and imagination; the inquisition, however, ordered him to change the painting to include only the proper figures that would"ve been at the last supper. Instead, veronese changed the title so that it didn"t reference a biblical story. Commissioned by pope paul iii, who asked michelangelo to paint the last judgement.
