Who is most at risk?
Children, women, geriatrics, anyone financial dependent on their partner, people
with disabilities, indigenous people (2x more likely), LGBTQ community
Violence against women and children is a public health issue of global
importance. Global data show that one out of every three women will experience
physical or sexual abuse in their lifetime. Approximately 18% of women and almost
8% of men say they have been victims of sexual abuse as children. The health
impacts are significant when violence happens.

30% of women experience intimate partner violence in their lifetime.
80% of intimate partner violence is against women.
32% of adults in Canada report having experienced some form of maltreatment as a
child. Most commonly neglect and exposure to intimate partner violence.
Most people don’t come forward until later and there isn’t anything they can do
about it.
Family violence is complicated- no single factor can accurately predict when it
will happen. Different combinations of factors at the individual, family,
relationship, community and societal level affect the risk for family violence.
Examples of factors include beliefs about gender and violence and relationship
characteristics as power and control.
Family violence is connected to power imbalances. There is a power and control
wheel and it breaks down the pieces of power the power control is used against
