Elder abuse and neglect are forms of ipv that continue into older adulthood and these people are more vulnerable with age ( could be spousal abuse or new forms of abuse that arise) Disproportionate for genders- older women are more vulnerable than older men. Absue can be inflicted by caregiver, service provider, other person in situation with power or trust ( abuse can happen when senior is living in institution or in a private residence. Older adults become more frail and may require more medical attention and resource and the denial of that is considered abuse and neglect. For indivdiuals with economic dependence, disabilities and rural isolation also increase vulneratbility to violence. Spousal homicide victims is gendered: women are more vulnerable as victims. Lifetime rates of physical assault by an intimate partner are around 25-30% in canada and us. Physical assault is generally accompanied by sexual or emotional abuse too.
