a) Describe the typical model for prenatal education in Canada. What is available in
NS?
Nova Scotia has introduced a prenatal website designed to provide information to
expectant parents and replace the traditional in-person prenatal classes. . Online resources
are important but people believe they shouldn’t stop prenatal classes all together. One
problem with it is not everyone has access to the online resources.
If there were improved prenatal options in Nova Scotia, mothers would gain more
knowledge on the availability of having a midwife deliver their baby rather than a doctor
at the hospital. Since there is a high risk of infection at hospitals, they are not necessarily
the best place to deliver a baby. Although, if parents are not educated on this they are
more likely to go to the hospital to deliver the baby.
The typical model in Canada varies but it is mostly shifting to online resources, for
example toronto and ontario already have online resources. There are still prenatal classes
available in Canada however many women are finding resources online.
b) Describe the centering pregnancy model. What are the benefits? Are there any
barriers to this method of education?
The centering pregnancy model is a group perinatal care that involves three components,
health care assessment, education, and peer support. The health assessment consists of
the first 40 minutes of the class and the last 60-75 is discussion related to education and
support. Around 18 to 20 weeks of pregnancy, you will be invited to join a Connecting
Pregnancy (CP) group with approximately ten other women and their partners who are
due to have their baby the same month as you. The CP groups are nine two-hour sessions
facilitated by a doctor or midwife alongside one of our nurses.
Group perinatal care is best because it shifts the authority to the women who have similar
due date and facilitates learning and encourages discussion and develops mutual support.
Improved birth outcomes such as lower rates of preterm babies, increased knowledge,
improved satisfaction, higher breastfeeding initiation rates. Centering could save the
healthcare system $8 billion each year by preventing preterm birth alone. The Centering
Pregnancy Model has been shown to reduce racial disparities in preterm birth. African
American women, who are at higher risk for preterm birth in the US, experience lower
risk of preterm birth.
A barrier is that not everyone can get to the group classes due to distance. Another barrier
could be a lack of support with the mother (i.e. single parent, multiple children). This
could be a problem and be harder for the mother to attend centering pregnancy sessions.
The fee for this program is $250. Subsidies are available if needed.
c) What is the Canadian Prenatal Nutrition Program?
It is a community-based program that provides support to improve the health and well-
being of pregnant women, new mothers and babies facing challenging life circumstances.
The goals of CPNP are to improve maternal-infant health, increase the rates of healthy
