PSYC 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 25: Critical Period, John Bowlby, Myelin
Document Summary
The strength of a child"s attachment/relationship seen around 6 months of age is imperative to their future. Attachment is a equivalent to the bond that a child has with their parent, specifically their moth- er. Sigmund freud: cupboard theory of attachment formation, developed a theory as to how children assume connections with their mothers because they provide the cupboard essentials , i. e. food and milk. Avoidant mother: impatient, expresses negative feelings, does not like close contact, displays open rejection of the infant. Bowlby: expressed that infants and mothers are hard-wired to be in close proximity, shows protection and safety. Teratogens are substances that can pass through the placenta and reach the fetus during a mother"s pregnancy. Ex: fetal alcohol syndrome brain growth and development delays. The child"s brain is 80% developed at age 4: myelination of axons is occurring so processing becomes faster, multiple sclerosis is a disorder in which the myelin sheath disappears.
