AHCL 2105H Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Helots, Spartan Constitution, Ephor
Document Summary
Spartan girl"s educaion was also supervised by the state: exercise, outside, eat and drink. Child bearing was their only obligaion: best training was exercise because it made the girls stronger. Girls exercised in the nude, not considered shameful: thought to make them less materialist and more modest. For their marriage a dowry was paid by her father: it was equal to half of his sons share of property (it athans it was 1/6) Spartan women could inherit and own their own property. Too free, too indulged, bad inluence on their men. Spartan marriage was also, to a certain degree, by the system. Spariate men who didn"t marry were forced to sing while marching in the nude in the winter. Men could not sleep or eat with their wives unil they were 30: men supposedly snuck home in the middle of the night to see their lives. When spouses saw each other during the day they ignored each other.
