Tyrants was usually a member of the elite, who had been a successful magistrate (well known with poliical experience: he would seize power in the polis for himself (dictator) Didn"t carry the negaive aspects as it would today. Mercenary: hired by the tyrant outside of the polis (ight for money) The tyrant would usually gain control with the support of the populaion of the polis: if he can convince the army he is beter then the aristocrats they would support him. He would convince the people that he could calm the city. Hoi polloi (the masses) openly supported the tyrant or refused to defend the government he was challenging. Tyrants were popular, capable, and good for the polis they governed. Oten tried to pass their power onto their son: impossible for the son to match the popularity of his father.
