BIOL 1020H Lecture 6: BIOL 1020H Module 6 Notes
Document Summary
Biol 1020h: current issues in biology, i. Module 6 notes for exam. We will be addressing only a small portion of the material covered in the text. Behaviour then can be selected against, and behaviours, which reduce survival and reproduction, will be removed from the species. Know tinbergen"s four questions to understand animal behaviour and how they may be applied in the study of animal behaviour. Concept: discrete sensory inputs can stimulate both simple and complex behaviours. Forms of animal communication: visual communication, auditory communication. Concept: selection for individual survival and reproductive success can explain most behaviours. The title of this section should seem fairly obvious. Selection should favour any traits, which favour survival and reproductive success, including behaviour. The main requirement is that the behaviour is heritable. If the behaviour is not heritable, then there is nothing for selection to work on. The evolution of foraging behaviour: natural selection should favour maximizing foraging success with minimum cost.
