Document Summary

Neurons: highly specialized cells that transmit signals directly to target cells using an electrical system. Most of the cells cytoplasm and organelles are located inside the: cell body or soma. Cellular respiration, enzymes are produced and nutrients are assembled. The cell body: is where the area where all cell maintenance activities take place. The neuron also has dendrites: which are small projections on the cell body. Central nervous system (cns) : brain and spinal cord. Peripheral nervous system (pns) : nerves, ganglia, and nerve plexuses (outside of the cns) Association neuron (interneuron) : multipolar neuron located entirely within the cns. Sensory neuron (afferent neuron) : neuron that transmits impulses from a sensory receptor into the cns. Motor neuron (efferent neuron) : neuron that transmits from the cns to an effector, for example a muscle. Nerve: cable-like collection of many axons in the pns; may be mixed (contain both sensory and motor fibers)
