Document Summary
Types of epithelium: simple/stratified squamous epithelium- this is flattened and mesh like, simple/stratified cuboidal epithelium this is cube shaped, simple/ stratified columnar epithelium this is elongated. *there is also pseudo stratified columnar epithelium unlike regular columnar epithelium this epithelium will not be attached to the basement membrane and is how you tell the 2 apart. Stratified = more than 2 layers of cells. Simple = 2 layers of cells or less. Lines the interior and exterior of the body. Anything entering or exiting the body will always cross a layer of epithelium. Non- vascular and will always rest on a basement membrane (except when it is pseudo stratified) Provides protection and used in absorption, secretion, sensation and diffusion. Apical domain the is the luminal free surface i. e. the very top layer. Basal domain this is attached to the basement membrane and forms the bottom layers. Lateral domain this is attached to adjacent cells i. e. left and right.
