Was in use from the time of the renaissance ( 15 century) Ancient medieval modern - time periods. This use of modern was used to signify a time period or historical era. When scholars today talk about the modern period usually mean an era/time from the late 19th century until mid twentieth century. Referred to as a time of profound change. Time of excitement and opportunity but also anxiety and stress to adapting. Religion is important central or dominant , rise of science. Destruction of traditional/ancestral ways of life; decline of magic. Values, traditions, practices begin to melt away , people leave them behind. Massive technological change (destruction of time + space) Important french poet, critic + theorist of modern life. Comes from latin modernus derived from latin adverb modus . Modernism: the period in culture from roughly the end of the 19th century to middle of 20th century.
