Week 3 – Fairy Tales
Once Upon a Time
Different from the versions of the stories that we are familiar with
Charles Perrault
oHighly educated, very upper class, collected his stories from people in his circle (servants)
oDans le salon – everyone got together and shared stories – snobbery, emphasizes wit, sophisticated –
gendering the audience
oAttaches morals to everything
Classicism and aristocracy
oClassicism was the rage – Greek myth, heroic virtues, elevated and formal style, not interested in the
lower people
Petite chaperon rouge (little red riding hood)
oTale of manners for the ladies of the salon
oRed hood was a symbol of sex, not actually a red hood – red is the colour of passion – not wearing the red
hood, but IS the red hood, growing into sexuality
oNot talking about a real wolf, but a man who was very sly and sexual – doesn’t know it is bad to talk to
the wold – innocence and foolishness
oMoral: young children/young ladies should never talk to strangers because they will be taken advantage
of and will provide sex for 'wolves'
oNot being vulgar and openly talking about sex, but it is clear that that is the point of the entire story,
everyone knows what he is saying without him actually coming out and saying it
oFalling prey to her own passions or prey to a more powerful man
Coded non-saying
oNot talking about sex, but it is so carefully coded with particular situations that it is clear and obvious that
is what he is implying
oIndirect references
oStory of Innocence being consumed by wickedness OR a sexually growing girl moving into her
sexuality
