ERSC 2240H Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Statin, Voronoi Diagram, Evapotranspiration
Document Summary
Water balances provide conceptual framework within which hydrologists conduct their research. Can be rearranged when net storage is negligible. Long term runoff from watershed is a function of precipitation (p) on evapotranspiration (et) from surface. Temporal variations in runoff depend on precipitation, but also on the proportion of precipitation that infiltrates into the subsurface. Precipitation gauges: used for greater accuracy due to the narrow funnel. (figure 1) Using catchments find the average number to consolidate it to one number. Interception: when the canopy does not allow rain water to reach the soil. There is a max rate at which soil can absorb the water. Rainfall intensity is less than this capacity, the infiltration rate will be equal to the rainfall rate. If intensity exceeds the ability of soil to absorb moisture, infiltration occurs. Infiltration is expressed as units of depth per unit time (m/s) Infiltration capacity slows down over time ad moisture levels increase -- exponential decrease.
