Week 3 lecture: pope urban ii"s call to crusade and the crusading movement (november 27, 1095) No money, spent all their wealth doing it. Paradox: the crusades were a failure that continued for 700 years. A series of military campaigns called by the catholic church, originally to regain jerusalem, but quickly expanded to include various forms of violence against the catholic church"s external and internal enemies. Pilgrimage - was a long standing practice, of visiting holy places to improve one"s faith. Exact words not known, but much like: Urged reconquest of christian territory taken by muslims. Promised lands and rights would be protected. Vow signified by wearing a cross on clothing. Ordered soldier to fight muslims to take back their holy land. Only wanted trained fighters, with wealth to ensure that they were suitable for the task. They had to get written permission from priest and wives to let them go.
