In the 1800s, population of ireland went up to 8 million and were mostly farmers: occurred in the 1840s, potatoes were the number one crop in ireland and were the main food source. James stevens fled to paris but returned in 1858 to ireland. Nov. 13/13: stevens then established the fenian brotherhood, who wanted to establish however possible. Us civil war: many americans killed, president lincoln killed in terror acts, north usa wanted to maintain the integrity of the country, south wanted to go their own direction. Issues of slavery and the us constitution: by 1864, north defeated the south. Nov. 13/13: fenians felt powerful and decided to therefore attack british north america. Idea was to hold the colonies hostage forcing britain to give ireland independence: prompted mcgee to go against the fenians, disliked violence, many fenians thus saw mcgee as a traitor.
