The yangban- nobility; was very important, inluence policies, only they could take the examinaion system. Slavery- 30% of the populaion was slaves 1037 slavery became hereditary; ended in 1894 (lasted so long because the yangban wanted it) Inluence of china (mainly) and korea: buddhism and confucianism. Shinto- the way of the gods (kami= spirits that live in nature) The aristocracy- powerful poliical force, emperor had to deal with the aristocracy. Samurai- warrior class, poliical from 12th c: shogun- held the real power. Military general; supposed to carry out emperor"s wishes, but he actually held the real power, came from the samurai class: emperor- symbolic power.
