Democracy contains within itself seeds of destruction. Don"t want to be told what to do. Turn to a strong authority figure: people"s friend (political saviour) Does not deny that they can be clever, manipulative. Important: must keep up state of crisis. Willing to hand over freedoms to work for peace. Protest: you will be handed to enemy, expelled. People with consciences, thought are driven out by tyranny. People are left to be turned into puppets. The worst kind of person, unlike philosopher ruler. Most unjust person, soul torn by desires. Represents, copies, reproduces, represents something outside itself. Plato believes that it is bad, condemning art in general. Senses only put you in touch with appearances. The bed in your dormroom is less real than platonic idea of bedhood. Painter comes along and paints picture of bed. When painting a bed, you paint the bed as it looks to him from a p. o. v. Copy of a copy of the real thing.
