Ad hominem used to be viewed as strictly fallacy but can be correct. Straw figures can be found in ad hominem as representation of the person being attacked. Can be used to expose vested interest but can also be used to discredit the arguer. Insulting the arguer over an actual argument can be negative. Emotionally neutral sayings should be used to avoid fallacy. Poisoning the well is under investigation of ad hominem where you expose hidden premises and conclusions that make it difficult to argue in the future (poisoning the well from anyone else wants to drink from it) The alleged authority has questionable or irrelevant credentials. Can be similar to ad hominem to expose controversial credibility.
