PSYC 1020H Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Slow-Wave Sleep, Night Terror, Sleep Paralysis
Document Summary
Health: depression, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity. Work: errors, impaired concentration, slower reaction times, poor work performance. Nrem (non-rapid-eye-movement) sleep: stage 1 (lightest sleep, stage 2 (deeper sleep, stages 3 and 4 (deepest sleep) Rem (rapid-eye-movement) sleep: light sleep (also called paradoxical sleep, (cid:498)dreaming sleep(cid:499) because dreaming is most likely to be going on in this stage of sleep. Stages 1 and 2 are called light slow wave sleep or non-rem (nrem) sleep. Stages 3 and 4 are called deep slow wave sleep or non-rem (nrem) sleep. Autonomic activities (heart rate and respiration) are slow and regular. Sleep deepens, short bursts of activity on the eeg called sleep spindles. Breathing irregular, muscle tone decreases and body generally relaxes. ***review brain waves of different stages for exam. Some muscle tension in large muscle groups. Sleep walking and talking occur in nrem (claims stage 4). 20% of sleep time is spent here. Hr, bp both increase, and major muscles are paralyzed.
