Document Summary
Face mask appears to be two different convex faces, rather than one concave and one convex. Perception is based on (the association of) sensory atoms in memory via repeated, prior joint occurrences. The visual system looks for regularity and patterns. Perception results from the interaction between the intrinsic structure of the stimulus and the intrinsic structure of the brain. Perception is not built up from sensations but is a result but is a result of perceptual organization. The whole is greater or different than the sum of its parts (emergent property) Face blindness: cannot see whole of a face/combine properties. Law of pragnanz: very stimulus pattern is seen in such a way that the resulting structure is as simple as possible (perception follows a minimum principle) We tend to separate the important aspects of the figure from the surroundings (background). We focus or give our attention to the figure. Real or imagined contour lines separate the contour and the group.
