Need to answer questions through careful observation. Questions must also be testable (you must be able to attach operational de nitions to all variables: this requires a systematic way of collecting and understanding data. Reliability : extent to which observations can be replicated, are measures dependable or stable. Common factors affecting reliability : psychological state of people being observed, carelessness in scoring a measure (easy to make errors, subjectivity, etc, ambiguous rules for interpreting scores (not clear what the real answer is) Seven stages of the scientific method in psychology. Operational de nitions the de nition of behaviours or qualities in terms of how they are to be measured.
