Human development: adolescence & adulthood: we tend to confuse the terms adolescence and puberty . Puberty: the physiological changes involved in sexual saturation (& other body changes that occur at this time) Adolescence: the psychological experiences between puberty and adulthood. Puberty (cont. ) has 3 distinct stages: pre-pubescent stage. Includes the first evidence of sexual maturation (priamry sexual characteristics: ends at the first appearance of pubic hair, pubescence, growth spurt accelerates, post-pubescence, growth spurt decreases, competition of primary sexual characteristics. Physical development: timing of puberty, girls between the ages of 10-15 (usually 1-2 years before boys, boys between the ages of 11-16, puberty triggered by hormones. Interactions between: hypothalamus, pituitary gland, reproductive organs. The adolescent brain: much more important than previously thought, period of important neural growth. Peers: peer group is important in adolescent development, relevant earlier too. It is the perry group that often determines what is normal or deviant: especially in terms of physical changes, body image, & behaviour.
