Trait theory: the five-factor model applications & evaluation. Early work by norman (1963) argued 5 factors are necessary to understand personality: 5-factor solutions were found repeatedly in a wide range of data sources, samples, and instruments, all 5 factors shown to possess reliability and validity. The 5 traits: (remember ocean: openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, neuroticism. Norman took a bunch of personality traits and then ran factor analysis repeatedly across different genders and age groups. Openness: means a person is imaginative, independent minded and has divergent thinking. Conscientiousness: means a person is responsible, orderly, and dependable. Extraversion: means a person is talkative, social, assertive. Agreeableness: means a person is good natured, co-operative and trusting. Neuroticism: means a person is anxious, prone to depression and worries a lot. The neo-personality inventory-revised (neo-pi-r) of costa and mccrae. A strength is that forms are available for both self-report and ratings by others.
