Psyc 2400 lecture five: common concepts about memory were compiled into one model, anchors working memory historically, contextualizes working memory with regard to other memory systems. The structure of memory sensory, short-term, long-term. Think of each storage device in terms of: time how long things are kept there, quantity how many things are kept there, quality the characteristics of the information kept there. Sensory memory: very brief, basic concepts, huge quantity, stays as it is, there is a sensory store for each sense modality (at least 5 exist, sperling, two types of sensory memory: iconic memory & echoic memory. Iconic memory: george sperling (1960) assessed visual sensory memory (iconic memory, presented subjects a 3 x 4 matrix of letters, two recall conditions: whole report & partial report, decays quickly. Iconic memory duration is less than 1 second. Iconic memory contents are an image: average of remembering four letters.
