Relationship between episodic and semantic memory is not well understood. Bartlett approach: accepting that our capacity to control any single study will inevitably be limited. Attempting to control the experimental situation causes the most interesting aspects of memory to be lost. Study memory in trying to remember stories. Remembered story was always short, coherent and fit in with the participants viewpoint. Participants actively strived to put meaning behind the stories. Long term structured representation of knowledge that was used to make sense of new materials. Memory is not an exact copy of our experiences. Emphasis of social and cultural influences on development of schemas. Study memory in regards to how many errors occur. Common in legal proceedings or when memory is pushed too far. Many of the errors could be elevated using clearer instructions. Errors occur due to being encouraged past the limits of what we can clearly recall.
