Classification systems: must have clearly defined categories (ie: anxiety) or dimensions (ie: low, moderate, severe), must be reliable, valid. Most widely used in us: diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders, 5th edition (dsm-5). Clinically-derived top down (experts agree on criteria). Later: expanded to include categories specific to children, adolescents. Considering the dsm approach: does discuss comorbidity/co-occurrence, early versions had weak interrater reliability. Parents or others report on presence or absence of specific behaviours. Responses quantified using statistical techniques (ie: factor analysis). Syndromes: broadband syndromes clusters of behaviours. Child behaviour checklist (cbcl) is an example: narrowband syndromes: eight kinds (see table 5. 1 in the textbook). Reliable fairly high in similar situations. Stigmatization and the impact of labels: diagnostic labels being placed in a category. October 05, 2016: stigmatization stereotyping, prejudice and discrimination. Problems with labeling: preconceived notions about what the disorder is and the actions of those with it, level of severity, and changes in situations factors.
