Document Summary
Symbolic order through which individuals communicate and organize their collective life. Start with assumption that symbolic communication is basis of culture. Culture revolves around symbols we create and share. Form and content of cultural activity varies over time, and over societies/cultures. Symbolic communication: varies according to the nature of the organization of social relations" of productions and reproduction (the social organization) relates back to mode of production. Main forms culture has taken is divided between art and everything else (art vs. non art) Division between these things is socially constructed. People need certain money/knowledge to be a part of art culture. Art exists in a social context, not so much about person creating art, it is about those receiving it that determine its status. Most symbolic creations are produced to create a profit tied into capitalist production. When we study popular culture critically, we look at ways at capital and artistic expression are combined in process we call cultural commodification.
