American white workers on upper middle class: professionals and managers are seen to lack integrity and be over- compeiive, financial success and authority admired, as long as accompanied by competence and know-how, i. e. , pracical knowledge. American white workers on afro-americans: blacks and the poor seen as lacking work ethic, very sharp lines against people on welfare, the homeless and part-ime workers all associated with blacks. American white workers: moral boundaries: morality more important than economic deiniions of success, values: Explanaion: emphasis on morality as a way to maintain dignity in face of lack of material success, surroundings perceived as threatening and in need of moral order. Poor: whites seen as domineering, less likely than whites to see material success as indicator of good moral character, because of experiences with racism. American black workers on poor blacks: draw fewer boundaries between themselves and the poor more emphasis on solidarity *possibly an artefact of research method.
