Divorce was not common in early history. Divorce act of 1968: granted divorce to couples who had experienced marital breakdown and three years of separaion, the number of divorces between 1968 and 1970 almost doubled. Divorce act of 1985: reduced the waiing period from three years to one. William goode (funcionalist) contends that divorce rate increases result from a. Bohannan"s six staions of divorce: the emoional divorce, the legal divorce, the economic divorce, the co-parental divorce, the community divorce, the psychic" or psychological divorce. Both are essenial for a solid marriage. Macro-structural inluences: legislaive changes, decreasing importance of faith, women"s increased paid labour force paricipaion, more complex family forms, especially remarriages, at greater risk, cohabitaion, premarital pregnancy, childbirth, age at marriage. Micro-level factors: parental divorce/intergeneraional transmission, marrying before the age of 20, social class, periods of unemployment, premarital cohabitaion, premarital pregnancy/birth, stepchildren, interracial marriage, second and higher order marriages.
