SOCI 1001H Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Bogardus Social Distance Scale
Document Summary
The relationships between ethnic and racial groups are unequal. The ethnic diversity is integrated in a system of structured inequality. Our society is characterized by ethnic stratification: the ordering of ethnic groups into a hierarchy of inequality, where some groups are dominant and hold greater power over other subordinate ethnic groups. The ranking determines who gets what and who is valued. Ethnic relations and ethnic inequality are the same. When we talk about majority and minority regarding groups, we are talking about unequal power between the groups, not numerical, but hierarchy/power. Ethnicity and race are terms that are often used interchangeably. Ethnicity refers to a group with unique cultural traits [ex. / language, clothing, customs] Ethnicity is understood as having a sense of community amongst themselves. Membership from birth; usually people are born into their ethnic group. A sense of distinctiveness; boundaries around the group; they are different.
