Document Summary

Canada has the appearance of being tolerant and democratic. Closer up, there is more going on: we have many profound decisions that lead to consequences for some people. The main term used for this is stratification. To be stratified is to say it is divided into hierarchal categories or social strata: strata is layers. Stratification: a system in which a society rank orders categories of people into a hierarchy. It is looking at how various groups of people are socially organized and how they are ranked into a hierarchy. When there is a hierarchy, some people get more valued things than others. Those higher up in canada do get more: it is not an equal situation. Social stratification is intricately connected to social inequality!! Used to describe how certain attributes that are deemed to be valuable are unevenly distributed across social groups. Sociologists are trying to explain why these valuable attributes are distributed in a particular way.
