Applications of panoptic principle: prisons: to reform prisoners, hospitals: to treat patients, schools: to instruct schoolchildren, mental institutions: to confine & treat the insane, factories: to supervise workers, workhouses: to put to work & reform beggars and idlers. The panoptic principle was destined to spread throughout the social body (89) From preventing plague to increasing & multiplying social forces. Disciplinary society vs. feudal sovereignty: exercise of power at lowest cost, maximum intensity & extension, growth linked to output (economic production) Sum: increasing docility & utility of the system ( economics") Historical conjunctures giving rise to disciplinary society: increase in floating" population, larger groups (growing school population, growth of production. Sum: old forms of power were no longer adequate: too expensive and generated too much resistance. Accumulation of people: reduces inefficiency: multiplicity, no need to unity (privatization, reduces opposition (apparently democratic: everyone can participate, makes number an advantage (pyramids of individualization) Accumulation of capital (marx) + accumulation of people (durkheim)
