Why focus on media: one of the main means by which we learn, jackson katz, the most powerful pedagogical force. Any form of communication that targets a mass audience. Includes traditional forms: print, radio, cinema, television, recordings. Includes new/emerging media: electronic communications (websites, mobile computing, dvds, cds, blogs, apps) and digitized forms of traditional media, advertisement refer to textbook. The pervasiveness of media: so present it becomes almost invisible we are unaware of how influenced much we are by the media and how much we use it. How much time do you spend each week being influenced by the media: did you consider concurrent media usage, simulmedia more than one media source at a time. The influence of the media: tool of communication: media is not neutral. Mechanism of communication: passive recipient (sit there and just watch, i. e. tv, actively engaged (posting things on social media) What is being communicated: understandings of society, understandings of social norms.
