Extended families: households or households close together where other family members are present (aunts, uncles, grandparents) Nuclear families: two adults in a small household with a limited number of children. Two essenial funcions: primary socializaion: children and young children learn the norms and rules of society from the family, stabilizaion: maintaining rouine and keeping adults fully funcioning members of society. Marxist theory; focused on the inequaliies between class levels: families were not funcional for society generally, but for capitalist society. Families play a key role in coninuing the gender diferences. Early theories: theories of the family, families are funcional. Maintaining the status quo: families work on disinct roles; gender/age roles. Decline as marriage as a valued social insituion: delay in age of marriage, proceeded by cohabitaion, less permanent (divorce used to rare) Fewer children are now being had: used to be the key role of the families, more are not having any children at all, people are having smaller families.
